Blast Lung

The injury to the lungs as a result of the air blast (shockwave) produced by a bomb explosion is referred to as blast lung.

Features of blast lung:

  • subpleural patchy hemorrhages especially in line of ribs
  • rupture of alveolar septa
  • intrapulmonary hemorrhage
  • desquamation of broncial and alveolar epithelia
  • bullae formation at margins
  • pulmonary edema
  • blood stained froth in the airways
  • bronchopneumonia
