Diffusion capacity of lung is the ability to exchange gases between the alveoli and pulmonary blood. It is directly proportional to the surface area of the respiratory membrane and inversely proportional to the thickness. It is decreased in diseases which decrease the surface area (emphysema) and in those which increase the thickness (fibrosis).
