  • Visualisation of the interior of the eye using an ophthalmoscope
  • Used to detect abnormalities in the ocular fundus and the media
  • First invented by Babbage in 1847
  • Its usefulness was recognised only in 1851 when it was reinvented independently by Von Helmholtz
  • Types:
    • Distant direct ophthalmoscopy
    • Direct ophthalmoscopy
    • Indirect ophthalmoscopy
