Hippocampus is responsible for conversion of short term memory into long term memory. Only the explicit / declarative type of long term memory is formed in the hippocampus. Implicit / non declarative form of long term memory is not formed in the hippocampus. Epilepsy patients who have had both their hippocampi removed cannot form new long term memories of the explicit type. But they retain long term memories that were formed before the surgery – thus hippocampus is not the site of storage of long term memory.
