Polyuria in paroxysmal atrial tachycardia – Mechanism

Atrial Natriuretic Peptide – Molecular structure
  • Polyuria refers to increased production of urine
  • It can occur in paroxysmal atrial tachycardia

Mechanism of development of polyuria in paroxysmal atrial tachycardia:

  • There is increased contractile activity of atrium in paroxysmal atrial tachycardia
  • This leads to stimulation of atrial mechanoreceptors
  • They secrete increased quantities of Atrial natriuretic peptide
  • This in turn causes increase in urine production
