  • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (also known as laryngeal papillomatosis) is a disease caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
  • It is characterised by warty growths in the upper respiratory tract which can cause significant airway obstruction.
  •  Patients present with hoarseness of voice and breathing difficulty.
  • Treatment is by removal of the tumour via surgery / carbon dioxide laser.
  • It may be supplemented by intralesional injection of cidofovir in moderate to severe disease.
  • Interferon therapy can also be used.
