Doll's eye reflex

It is a test of brain function in comatose persons. It is also called oculocephalic reflex. It is based on the vestibulo ocular reflex which helps to stabilise our eyes. In order to test for Doll’s eye reflex, the head is eleveated about 30 degrees and is rapidly rotated from side to side with eyes kept open. This should not be attempted if injury to cervical spine is suspected.

In a positive / normal doll’s eye reflex, the eyes move in the direction opposite to that of the head movement. A negative response is said to occur if the eyes move in the direction of the head movement. A negative doll’s eye reflex signifies severe brain damage or brain death.
