Intillation of fluorescein into the eye

  • Fluorescein is a fluorescent dye that is used in ophthalmology for better visualisation of the eye during examination
  • It is instilled into the eye using a dropper as shown above and viewed under UV light
  • Uses
    • visualising corneal abrasions, corneal ulcers
    • In schirmer’s test for assessing function of lacrimal drainage system
    • Assessing the tear film underneath rigid gas permeable contact lenses
