Paraproteinemia – Definition

  • Paraproteinemia refers to increased amounts of a singly type of monoclonal gammaglobulins in the blood
  • It indicates an underlying immunoproliferative disorder

Types:

  • Depending on the type of monoclonal gammaglobulins found in blood, paraproteinemias are of 3 types
    • Light chain disease (light chain only present)
    • Heavy chain disease (heavy chain only present)
    • Full immunoglobulins (light chain : heavy chain ratio may vary)
