Physiology – MCQ 13 – All of the following statements are true for 'Intestinal Motility' except?

All of the following statements are true for ‘Intestinal Motility’ except:
A. Does not depend on Gastric motility
B. Increased by Distension
C. Increased by Acetylcholine
D. Increased by cholecystokinin

Correct answer : Does not depend on Gastric motility

The stomach can influence intestinal motility by means of migratory motor complexes and gastroileal reflex.

Migratory motor complex

  • It is seen in empty stomach
  • Every 90 minutes a wave of depolarization starts in the stomach and proceeds towards the intestine
  • It reaches upto the terminal ileum
  • This is followed by a peristaltic wave
  • The wave of depolarization and the peristaltic wave are together known as migratory motor complex

Gastroileal reflex

  • Vigorous gastric secretion / peristalsis can induce ileal peristalsis
  • The contents of the ileum are pushed into the colon
  • This may result in a mass peristalsis of the colon with an urge to defecate
