Goitre endemic areas of India

Goitre is found in the Himalayan goitre belt of northern India, which is located far away from the coastline where availability of seafood is very limited. It is composed of the following states:

  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Delhi
  • Punjab
  • Haryana
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Bihar
  • West Bengal
  • Sikkin
  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Assam
  • Mizoram
  • Nagaland
  • Manipur
  • Meghalaya
  • Tripura

The other areas in which goitre is found include parts of:

  • Gujarat
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Maharashtra
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Kerala
  • Tamil Nadu

Even coastal areas such as Ernakulam district in Kerala and Bharuch district in Gujarat is affected.
