  • Social mobility is the change in the social status of an individual / group over a period of time
  • Social mobility is an important factor that influences demography
  • Based on the extend of change, it is of 2 types
    • Horizontal (change in position within the same social class)
    • Vertical (change of social class)
  • Depending on whether the change take place within the period of  an individual’s life time, it can be of 2 types
    • Intragenerational – change occurs within an individual’s lifetime
    • Intergenerational – change occurs from the parent’s to the children’s generation
